PREMIO LEONARDO SCIASCIA "AMATEUR D'ESTAMPES"
The Leonardo Sciascia 'Amateur d'Estampes' Award is an international biennal artistic event promoted by the Associazione Amici di Leonardo Sciascia, an organisation founded in 1993 to promote the knowledge of Italian writer Leonardo Sciascia's opus, which can be regarded as a literary work, a passion for original prints, as well as strong political commitment. The headquarters of Associazione Amici di Leonardo Sciascia are based in the historical venue of Palazzo Sormani, in Milan.
The 2,500-euro prize is fully sponsored by the above-mentioned organisation, with the cooperation of Milan Central Library, 'Achille Bertarelli' Print Collection and Florence International School of Graphic Arts 'Il Bisonte. Basically, it is meant to commemorate Sciascia's great passion for original prints. In fact, the writer himself was a connoisseur and a collector of prints. The prize has already been awarded over the past six years.
This year it will include prints by 35 artists from various countries, who specialise in chalcography using techniques such as engraving, dry point, etching, aquatint and mezzotint. Their works will be assessed by a Jury formed by seven artists particularly appreciated by the Sicilian writer himself: Eduardo Arroyo, Rodolfo Ceccotti, Piero Guccione, Nunzio Gulino, Carla Horat, Giuseppe Modica and Roberto Stelluti. The prize-giving ceremony will be held on February 12, 2003 at 5 p.m. at the Municipal Library of Palazzo Sormani, in Milan. On the occasion, a round table on 'Original prints and literature' will be held as well.
An exhibition of the works submitted for the prize will be held in the Achille Bertarelli Print Collection reading room, at the Castello Sforzesco, from January 31 to March 3, 2003, then all exhibits will be donated to the Achille Bertarelli Print Collection.
The Leonardo Sciascia 'Amateur d'Estampes' Award is a unique initiative of its kind, as the calendar of events includes a great number of art exhibitions to be mounted in different countries around Europe. After the opening exhibition of March 16, 2002, in Valverde (province of Catania), which was followed by exhibitions in Rome, Florence, Venice (October 2002), Paris Fondation Taylor (from December 5 to December 21, 2002), the exhibition has come back to Milan Castello Sforzesco, where it will be hosted from January 31 to March 3, 2003. Prize awarding is expected for February 12, 2003, at Palazzo Sormani.
The exhibition catalogue (Limited edition) published by "Il Girasole" is available at the castle Art Bookstore for € 20,00.
